Nu-Gen Carnival on New Year’s Day
Burnie Sports and Events together with the Burnie Athletic Club today announced that a nu-gen carnival for young people between the ages of 10 and 16 will form part of a fresh approach to the traditional New Year’s Day Carnival.
Burnie Sports and Events CEO Mr Brett Whiteley and Burnie Athletic Club President Mr Bruce Jackson announced that a number of new initiatives have been agreed on, in an attempt to provide a much needed boost to the number of people attending.
Mr Jackson said, “It is absolutely imperative that fresh ideas are at least given a go and the nu-gen carnival is a great start to that list of ideas.”
Mr Whiteley said, “The success of the 321-Go proves that young people are keen to get active and while we recognise that the two events are very different, we believe that within the nearly 1500 participants just a few weeks ago there will be a percentage of those young people who take athletics just that little bit more seriously.”
“I think that people have forgotten what a great day New Years Day is at West Park, with plenty of action, some of the nation’s best athletes and cyclists and exciting chopping events. It is an inexpensive day of entertainment culminating in the much acclaimed Burnie Gift and Burnie Wheel races.”
There will initially be three new youth events plus the traditional junior 1500m handicap.
- Burnie Youth Gift – Male and Female events
- Burnie Youth 400m – Male and Female events
- Burnie Youth 800m – Male and Female events
The number of heats will depend on the number of entries with the finals of both Youth Gifts run in the evening part of the program.
Mr Whiteley said, “$3,000 worth of cash, prizes and random draws has been allocated to show that we are serious about including more young people in what will be the 125th Burnie New Years Day Carnival.”
Branded as nu-opportunities for nu-year’s day 2012, entry forms are now available by going to the Burnie Sports and Events website noticeboard. Flyers will also be distributed at all of the regions inter-school carnivals over the next week or so. School Physical Education teachers will receive a number of flyers in the mail to distribute to their students.
Mr Jackson said, “Other initiatives for the 2012 Carnival will be announced over the next few weeks with the formal launch of the 125th Carnival to be held on 13 December at ‘The Point’ Function Centre at West Park.”
